he wicks are made of cotton. Cotton was my second choice, behind linen. Unfortunately, even though my lady has been dismantling perfectly good pieces of linen, I couldn't find any linen threads after a cursory search, so I used cotton.
believe that pretty much any plant fiber was used, but that animal hair was not. I suspect because hair, fur and wool all stink when burnt. Tallow smells a bit like a roast dinner when it's burning, but if that were contrasting against the smell of burnt hair, it would be pretty bad.
irst up, I had to determine how thick a wick I would need. I made up a wick about 1-1.5mm thick, squashed some tallow around it and made up a quick dummy candle. It worked first time, so I settled on this as a good wick thickness.
